The Gentle Use of Power

REIKI

The method of Reiki in which I was trained is believed to have originally come from Tibetan Buddhism.
This method of healing resurfaced when Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese minister of the Christian School in Kyoto, began his personal search for insights into Jesus’ ability to heal.  His quest led him to the theological seminary at the University of Chicago where he earned a Doctor of Theology.   During this time he heard of the Buddha’s teachings which preceded   Jesus.  He then visited Zen Buddhist monasteries and learned Chinese and Sanskrit in order to study their sacred manuscripts. He rediscovered the formulas for contacting higher power to initiate healing.  He was warned that if he followed these ancient formulas he could die because of the power of the light.  He chose to take that risk on Mt. Kori-yama  and received through a beam of light symbols and the knowledge of their use.

Dr. Usui taught Reiki in Japan from then on and, before he died, passed on the knowledge to Dr. Chujiro Hayashi.   Dr. Hayashi opened a Reiki clinic in Tokyo.  In order to preserve the knowledge he passed it on to his wife and Mrs. Takata, a Hawaiian who had been healed at his clinic and continued to work with him.  She returned to Hawaii in 1937.  Dr. Hayashi helped her establish a Reiki clinic there and initiated her as a Reiki Master.  Mrs. Takata  initiated twenty-two Reiki masters in her lifetime and it was through her that Reiki was introduced to the United States.

This history is important because the energy which is used in Reiki treatments is sacred and comes from a long tradition of healing.   A session begins by grounding and inviting in Reiki Masters to assist.  Once   this connection is established, the practitioner begins the treatment.

The person receiving Reiki rests on a massage table fully clothed and is completely relaxed.   The practitioner proceeds to gently place her/his hands on twelve different positions on the body - four on the head and throat followed by four placements on the body front and back.  Once all twelve areas have received energy, the practitioner might return to areas where extra heat was noticed.  During the session the sacred Reiki symbols are traced on the recipient’s body with the intention of exhilarating the healing process.  A session can be completed easily in an hour.

Recipients’ remarks after sessions I have given:
